About iGEM
The international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is the most prestigious synthetic biology competition taking place every year in Paris (France). Student teams from universities all over the world work at their own schools using a standardized set of biological parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells. The collaborative process involves designing, building, testing, and measuring a system they create, employing interchangeable biological parts and standard molecular biology techniques. In addition to addressing real world challenges, iGEM also encourages public engagement and education about synthetic biology.
Projects are designed and executed by the students themselves and supervised by renowned scientists working in synthetic biology.
Since 2007 students of Freiburg University dedicate their summer to iGEM. This Year we competed with more than 400 teams from more than 50 countries at the annual Jamboree in Paris - France.
